FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

In Queensland, not all types of construction or renovation projects require a building approval or permit. These are called acceptable development and are set out in the planning act. Any external additions such as garages, carports, patios, fences over 2m or retaining walls over 1m will require a building permit. In a cyclone area all external additions require building approval however in non cyclonic areas some sheds are considered acceptable development (up to 10m2). Internal renovations that structurally impact the home are likely to require a building approval such as adding rooms, converting garages, removing bracing walls.

Even if a building permit is not required your renovations still have to meet the conditions of the national construction code. It is best to use a QBCC licensed builder to complete the work.

The cost will depend what you are doing. It is best to send your plans through to us and we can provide accurate costs and advice.
