FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

In some areas a carport is considered acceptable development (this means it does not need an approval) but in many areas your new  carport will require a building approval. A garage requires an approval. You can check with your local council as to whether a carport is acceptable development in your location. Alternatively, just send us your plans and we can provide a quote for the approval. Once the building approval assessment is complete we will advise if any further planning applications are required.

As a general rule if the carport is more than 1.5m off a side boundary and 6m from a front boundary it will not need further planning however there may be other planning requirements for your location which can be checked on your local councils website or with our town planners.

A garage will be approved as a class 10a and to use it as part of your house it will need to be reclassified as a dwelling (class 1a). To do this you will need a building approval and you may require further planning applications. The conversion will need to meet the standard for a dwelling as set out in the Building Code Australia (BCA).
